From the Zuckerman Museum of Art Permanent Collection:
A Peculiar Proximity to Spiritual Mysteries
Drawing its title from artist Grace Rosario Perkins eponymous work, the exhibition A Peculiar Proximity to Spiritual Mysteries is an exhibition that showcases various key contemporary works from the collection of the Zuckerman Museum of Art. Curated by Pablo Helguera and Ginger Wolfe-Suarez, this experimental exhibition draws on many rare and never been exhibited works of art using alternative methods of display, supplementary learning experiences, and sound recordings. Preparation for this exhibition included research and curatorial assistance by Registrar and Collections Manager, Michelle Lopez.
One focus of this exhibition was to research artists in our collection of diverse cultural backgrounds that we wanted to highlight. The artists included in this exhibition employ a range of techniques to explore issues of identity, race, and cultural origin. These artists often reference geography, translocation, cultural traditions, translation, political history, and collective memory. Language and storytelling are some constants in this exhibition. The research and conceptualizing of this exhibition were done prior to the tragic killing of George Floyd. However, we feel the concerns and issues explored by these artists regarding race, place, and migration continue to be pressing for museums and institutions around the world.
The exhibition includes the works of:
Tia Blassingame, Mildred Beltre, Canute Caliste, Nayda Collazo-Llorens, Frederick Schiller Cozzens, Jesus De La Rosa, Ruthann Godollei, Sheila Goloborotko, Rogelio Gutierrez, Antonio Jacobsen, Eddy A. López, Athos Menaboni, Ayanah Moor, Michelle Murillo, Grace Rosario Perkins, Robert Sherer, Bernice Sims, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, Keith Smith, and Henry Ossawa Tanner.
